Child Protection Statement

We believe that each child or young person in our community is created in God's image to 'have life in its fullness' (John 10.10).

Many children have proven to be severely harmed in circumstances where the church failed in its duty to protect them.  Along with the recognition that those in positions of trust subjected children to abuse, there has been further recognition of the need to reaffirm and emphasise that safeguarding the welfare of children must be paramount.

The Parish of Holy Cross has a zero tolerance attitude where the abuse of a child, young person or vulnerable adult is concerned. Any form of abuse, particularly sexual abuse, sexual misconduct, sexual impropriety or sexual exploitation of a child, male or female, will not be condoned or tolerated.

This strong commitment to the prevention of abuse, coupled with a range of measures aimed at reducing the risk of such abuse in future, will hopefully assure parishioners that children, young people and vulnerable adults will be able to develop physically, emotionally, intellectually, spiritually and socially in a safe environment free from harm or the threat of harm.

The priests and religious in Holy Cross are in positions of public trust and influence. We are expected to carry out our responsibilities, including ministry, mission, and a way of life, in an appropriate manner.  To this end, we will adhere fully to the Down and Connor Diocesan Child Protection Policies and Procedures in all activities, to ensure above all else, that the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults is nurtured, upheld and protected.

I also ask for the understanding of all adults who give up their precious time to our children and young people, in accepting the need for the adoption of these guidelines and procedures.  Your support in this matter is essential so that we can put appropriate systems in place to protect our children and young people.  I am committed to ensuring that, as far as is reasonably practicable, Holy Cross has and operates to the highest possible standards of child protection.

Aidan Troy C.P., P.P.
